Display to honor Hispanic veterans

After David Muro came back to Kansas City from the Korean War, the former U.S. Marine tried wearing his uniform when he went out to dinner.

Expecting a good meal, Muro was instead turned away. Some restaurants wouldn't serve a Mexican customer, Muro said, even one in military dress.

Muro, 69, has not forgotten the bigotry he faced. Now he is involved in a Hispanic veterans group that educates people about Hispanic contributions to America's history.

Earlier that day, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) president and chief executive officer also addressed the graduating class at Alta Vista Charter School in Kansas City, Mo. And he assured the 42 students, who comprised the largest graduating class in the school’s 13-year history, that they were more important than the countless honors he has received"
