January 23: Dolores Huerta to Speak at UMKC

On Friday, January 23, 2004, at 7 p.m., Dolores Huerta will be speaking at Pierson Auditorium on UMKC Volker campus.

Huerta has played a major role in the American civil rights movement through strikes, boycotts and legislative activism. She was co-founder of the United Farm Workers of American, AFL-CIO (UFW) with Cesar Chavez. As an advocate for farm workers rights, Huerta was arrested twenty-two times for nonviolent union activities.

As the second installment of the Social Justice Speaker Series, which last year brought you an evening with Dr. Angela Y. Davis; Dolores Huerta will be continuing the discussion on human rights through her experiences as an activist. This event is co-sponsored by Arts and Sciences Student Council, Students for Wymyn’s and Gender Studies (SWAGS), The Campus Greens, The Sociology/Criminal Justice Club, American Humanics, The Economics Club, Association of Latin American Students, Minority Student Affairs, Hispanic Law Students Association, The Institute for Labor Studies, American Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
